PWA Question What is cognitive flexibility?
PWA Answer Cognitive flexibility is the ability to adjust. It’s a skill which enables us to switch tasks, shift our attention in response to different demands and apply different rules in different settings.

Cognitive flexibility is also needed to be creative and look at situations from new or different perspectives. It helps children think about experiences and challenges in new ways, so it’s important for problem solving.

We can see how children use their cognitive flexibility when they are playing games; how quickly can they adjust to new rules? Can they switch their attention to something else easily?

In very young children, cognitive flexibility is naturally under-developed, but it becomes better over time; age-appropriate activities such as reading, pretend play, listening games and talking through problems can all help kids develop the skill.
