PWA Question What are some examples of executive functions in adults?
PWA Answer Executive functions really lie at the heart of almost everything we do, and play a significant role in our ability to plan, organize and execute things. As adults, we use these skills to plan ahead, use reasoning, and stay focused in order to reach a goal. So, the processes that we associate with executive functions are things like strategic thinking and responding; high-level kinds of mental abilities.

We use executive functions on a day-to-day basis. For example, if you are grocery shopping, you might have your child in the trolley with you, and you’re trying to remember three extra things you need but forgot to write down on your shopping list. So, you are using executive functions to keep in mind those items (and doing this despite lots of distraction if your child’s calling your name or you get a phone call). In addition, our ability to balance and shift, and to go from one thing to another, uses all of your executive function skills.
