PWA Try this For this activity you will need some chalk and a place to draw on the ground. Draw a hopscotch outline on the ground. The squares need to be big enough to allow {LEARNER_FNAME} to jump inside with both feet, but also small enough to enable {OBJ_PRONOUN} to jump over one square into the next. In each square, write one of the numbers 1-10.  Say: Can you make it across this bridge? You can’t see it, but some of these squares are filled with lava. I’ll tell you which ones, and you will have to remember to jump over them so you don’t fall in. The squares that have lava are three and seven. Go! {LEARNER_FNAME} should start at the beginning, and can jump on any square except three and seven until {SUBJ_PRONOUN} makes it to the end.  If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} accidentally steps on a “lava” square, see if {SUBJ_PRONOUN} remembers and jumps off. If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} doesn’t realize, just remind {OBJ_PRONOUN}.  If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} can successfully avoid two squares, make it more difficult by adding another square of lava and three numbers {SUBJ_PRONOUN} must remember.  Be sure to change the "lava" squares for each round.
PWA Variations
PWA What to look Does {LEARNER_FNAME} remember which squares {SUBJ_PRONOUN} should jump over? If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} accidentally steps on a lava square, notice whether {SUBJ_PRONOUN} remembers and jumps off.
PWA Why this matters This imaginative game requires {LEARNER_FNAME} to use {POS_PRONOUN} working memory to remember the rules, and control {POS_PRONOUN} actions to stay within those rules. UTM-EM-049-MAR-21
PWA Question Response Option first Stepped on all the squares and didn't seem to remember the lava ;Successfully jumped over one lava square but forgot about the others, or jumped over safe squares ;Remembered two lava squares ;Remembered three or more lava squares
