PWA Lead Figure out a stuffed animal friend's secret color rule so you can build a building! Then just when {LEARNER_FNAME} has it figured out, the secret color changes. Keep up with the switch and enjoy the paper slide in this activity!
PWA Materials blocks or legos thick paper stuffed animal or toy
PWA Progress Marker Searches for new rule upon rule change consistently;Switches to new color rule sometimes;Switches to new color rule more quickly
PWA Question Body After switching to the new color, how often did {LEARNER_FNAME} choose blocks of the old color (blue)?
PWA Tags Construction;Indoor;Shapes/ Colors
PWA Try this To set up, collect legos in three distinct colors (for example, red, blue and yellow). Make sure you have several of each. Keep the legos in a pile near you. Create a paper slide by stacking some objects such as books. You will slide blocks one at a time towards {LEARNER_FNAME}, so have the end of the slide be in easy reach of {OBJ_PRONOUN}. Test your slide by dropping a lego at the top of the slide and seeing where it ends up. Once the action starts, use a toy or stuffed animal to tell {LEARNER_FNAME} whether {SUBJ_PRONOUN} chose the correct color each time. Ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to make a structure out of the blocks or legos. Choose one color as a starting color (e.g., blue). Say: Let’s make a house for our friend Dino. He wants his house to be ALL the same color, but he didn't tell us which color! Let's try to figure it out. Dino will tell us if the color you chose is right or not! Catch blocks as they come down the slide! If it's not the color you want, move it into this discard pile. Begin dropping blocks down the slide one at a time, alternating colors randomly. Each time {LEARNER_FNAME} takes a block to add to the house, have the stuffed animal tell {OBJ_PRONOUN} if it is the right color or the wrong color. When {SUBJ_PRONOUN} takes a blue block, Dino will say: Yes! That's the color I want! If not, he will say: No, that's the wrong color. Put that block on the pile. It might take several rounds for {LEARNER_FNAME} to determine that the secret color is blue. Play at least 6 rounds of blue blocks. Once {SUBJ_PRONOUN} reliably chooses blue blocks and discards other colors, switch the rule. Say: Dino changed his mind! Now he wants a new color of blocks for his house. I wonder what color he wants now? Continue dropping blocks down the slide. It will again take some trial and error to find the new correct color, but pay attention to whether {LEARNER_FNAME} continues reaching for the blue blocks, rather than any other color. Keep playing as long as you want, or until you both decide Dino's new house is complete!
PWA Variations
PWA What to look Wait until {LEARNER_FNAME} has figured out what the first secret color is before changing the color. Once the rule switches, notice whether {SUBJ_PRONOUN} starts searching for the new secret color or continues choosing the first one.
PWA Why this matters When the toy changes its mind and prefers a different color, {LEARNER_FNAME} must solve the problem by changing {POS_PRONOUN} mindset from choosing only blocks of the first color to choosing blocks that are not that color. Each new decision will have to reference this changed rule until {SUBJ_PRONOUN} figures out the new color.
