PWA Try this Collect some snacks for {LEARNER_FNAME}. These should be small snacks that {LEARNER_FNAME} really likes, like pretzels or M&M’s. Take a transparent glass or bowl that {LEARNER_FNAME} is able to pick up, and place this in front of {OBJ_PRONOUN} where {SUBJ_PRONOUN} can see and reach it. Place one of the snacks underneath it. (We'll use M&Ms as an example.) The first two rounds will be short: 20 seconds and 45 seconds. Say: You get to pick: you can eat this M&M now, but if you want to play a game and and wait a bit longer, you can have an extra M&M later. I know sometimes it is hard to wait, but focusing on other things can make it easier. While you're waiting, maybe you can try making a song using the bowl or table as a drum. If they choose to eat it right away, give them the M&M. If they choose to wait, turn on a timer. Guide them through the first round by drumming a song with them on the table. When the timer reaches 20 seconds, give them the 2 M&Ms. Praise {POS_PRONOUN} effort at waiting and ask what {SUBJ_PRONOUN} was thinking about while waiting. For round 2, do the same thing with a single M&M, which they can double to 2 M&Ms if they wait for 45 seconds. This time, don’t drum along with them, but sit next to them while they continue to make music. When the timer goes off, give them the extra M&M. Finally, raise the stakes. Say: Now for a serious challenge! Just like before, you can eat this M&M now. Or, if you wait the whole time, you can eat this jackpot of M&Ms! (You decide how many is a jackpot reward!) Say: I'm going to come back in 5 minutes. While you're waiting, if you want to, try thinking about your drumming song! When I get back, if you've waited the whole time, you win the jackpot! Move away for the 5-minute waiting period and then come back at the end. See if {LEARNER_FNAME} will play {POS_PRONOUN} song. If the snack is still there, give {OBJ_PRONOUN} the promised jackpot. You can start with short time delays (3-5 min) and when doing this task again, increase the delay time (e.g., to 10-20 minutes).
PWA Variations
PWA What to look Does {LEARNER_FNAME} get distracted by the prize they can see on the table? What other strategies does {SUBJ_PRONOUN} use while waiting?
PWA Why this matters Delay of Gratification is an important aspect of self-control. Research has shown that by using different strategies (such as distraction) to resist the desire to immediately get what you want, this skill can be encouraged and even taught.
