| PWA Materials | piece of paper |
| PWA Progress Marker | Skips secret number while counting consistently;Remembers to skip over secret number occasionally;Skips secret numbers more often |
| PWA Question Body | How many times out of 6 rounds was {LEARNER_FNAME} able to suppress saying the secret number? |
| PWA Tags | Numbers/ Words |
| PWA Try this | Use the numbers that {LEARNER_FNAME} can reliably count to. {SUBJ_PRONOUN_T_CASE} can take turns with you, a sibling, or a friend. Decide on a range of numbers that you will take turns counting to. If {LEARNER_FNAME} can count to 10, you can start at 1 and count upwards. If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} can count to 5, you can start back at 1 when you reach 5. Practice counting together while taking turns going back and forth: you say "one", then {LEARNER_FNAME} says "two", and so on. Once {SUBJ_PRONOUN} is comfortable at counting back and forth, add the *Inhibition* challenge. Say: Our friend the elephant asked us to keep a very special secret for him. He chose a number to be the secret number and we have to help him keep his secret! Write one number on a piece of paper (e.g., "3") and ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to whisper it in your ear to make sure {SUBJ_PRONOUN} knows it. Say: Yes, that's the secret number! But don't say it out loud! We'll try counting again but if it's your turn to say the secret number, just say "Shh!" Like this: one, two, (shh!), four, five. Take turns going back and forth, saying "shh" each time the secret number comes up. After 6 rounds, switch the secret number. Make it more challenging by adding a second number to remember (for example, don't say 3 _or_ 7). |
| PWA Variations | |
| PWA What to look | It may be difficult initially for {LEARNER_FNAME} to avoid counting all the numbers aloud; after all, that is also an important achievement! However, in this case try to notice if {SUBJ_PRONOUN} improves in holding back the secret number. Pausing can also be a good sign that {SUBJ_PRONOUN} is exercising this important skill. |
| PWA Why this matters | Learning numbers often leads to reciting them in ascending order, which after many repetitions becomes second-nature. By choosing certain numbers to skip, {LEARNER_FNAME} will have to think about inhibiting the correct numbers in the sequence rather than reciting a rehearsed list. |
