PWA Try this Create a pretend ice cream shop by setting out four different colors of "ice cream." To create the scoops of ice cream, you can either use different colors of play dough or cut out circles from construction paper. Make cones by using rolled up construction paper. Set the ice cream materials on one end of a table, and sit at the other end of the table with some of {LEARNER_FNAME}'s favorite dolls or animals. Ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to be the scooper, and you can be one of {POS_PRONOUN} customers. Ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to name the ice cream flavors available. {SUBJ_PRONOUN} can make these up {REFLEXIVE_PRONOUN} based on the colors of the paper you used (brown could be chocolate, red could be raspberry, etc.). Order your ice cream by naming some of the flavors and asking {LEARNER_FNAME} to give them to you in the same order, with the first flavor on the bottom. If {LEARNER_FNAME} mixes up the order, that's okay. Ask {OBJ_PRONOUN} to try again. It's all part of the play! Enjoy your pretend ice cream!
PWA Variations
PWA What to look Pay attention to how many different flavors of ice cream {LEARNER_FNAME} is able to scoop in the correct order. When {SUBJ_PRONOUN} makes mistakes, is it the order of the ice cream or the combination of flavors that trips {OBJ_PRONOUN} up?
PWA Why this matters Working memory is connected to a variety of developmental domains. For example, it helps immensely with communication because it allows {LEARNER_FNAME} to remember the beginning of a sentence so {SUBJ_PRONOUN} can understand the middle and end; it supports Problem Solving as {LEARNER_FNAME} works to keep track of all of the important pieces of a problem; and it even touches everyday functions, like following instructions or remembering where a particular object is.
