PWA Try this
|
Prepare by picking some treats or rewards that {LEARNER_FNAME} likes, such as snacks, or favorite objects, like stickers. Explain that you’re going to play a waiting game.
Say: When you’re waiting, it helps to think of happy things. What are some things that make you happy? Together, write down at least three of {LEARNER_FNAME}’s favorite things. If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} needs help with ideas, ask about a favorite toy, a good friend, or a nice memory.
Put one of the treats on the table in front of {LEARNER_FNAME}, and say: This is for you. You can have it whenever you’d like. But if you wait for three minutes, you can have two. Would you like one now or two later?
If {LEARNER_FNAME} says {SUBJ_PRONOUN} would like two later, ask {OBJ_PRONOUN} to think about the things that make {OBJ_PRONOUN} happy while {SUBJ_PRONOUN} waits. For the first round only, you can help by reading {LEARNER_FNAME}’s list back to {OBJ_PRONOUN}, and suggest that {SUBJ_PRONOUN} imagines one of the happy things or tells you more about it.
After the first three-minute challenge, extent the waiting time to five minutes, and then more as {LEARNER_FNAME}’s patience increases. |

PWA What to look
|
Keep track of how long {LEARNER_FNAME} waits before taking {POS_PRONOUN} treat. Does {SUBJ_PRONOUN} take the one treat before the time is up, or does {SUBJ_PRONOUN} wait for the second treat? |
PWA Why this matters
|
Once {LEARNER_FNAME} has this strategy in {POS_PRONOUN} skill set, {SUBJ_PRONOUN} will be able to use it with fewer and fewer prompts from you. It works because thinking about other things distracts from the immediate reward, and the desire for the treat greatly decreases when it is not the focus of {LEARNER_FNAME}’s attention. Thinking about happy things also satisfies the emotional part of {LEARNER_FNAME}’s brain that wanted the reward in the first place.
