PWA Tags Indoor;Preparation;Shapes/ Colors
PWA Try this To start, cut out 10-15 shapes from felt, paper or cardboard. Cut out squares, rectangles and triangles of different sizes and colors, and make two of each piece. There should be more pieces than you need to make any one image. Place the shapes out on the table so you can see them all. Decide on a design to create from the shapes you have. For example, you can make a house by using a square for the building and a triangle on top for the roof. Say: Let’s build a house! There will be five steps. Watch me carefully as I put them together. (If there are more or less steps, reveal how many pieces there will be, but don’t use more than five or six steps.) Demonstrate putting each piece of the house together while narrating what you are doing. Remember the sequence that you use. Make sure to layer some of the elements, such as putting a rectangular door on top of the square house shape. Leave your house in place as a reference. Then let {LEARNER_FNAME} copy you and build {POS_PRONOUN} own house the same way, using the second set of shapes you cut out. Take turns creating new things and trying to copy each other’s designs.
PWA Variations
PWA What to look Does {LEARNER_FNAME} pay attention to the order you use when creating your design? How many steps is {SUBJ_PRONOUN} able to follow in the correct sequence?
PWA Why this matters Working memory is an important part of being able to follow directions, especially remembering multiple steps in order. In this activity, layering pieces of felt gives {LEARNER_FNAME} some clues about the order in which {SUBJ_PRONOUN} should place {POS_PRONOUN} own pieces when copying the pattern. UTM-EM-049-MAR-21
