| PWA Try this | Collect some small treats such as M&Ms and place one under an upturned glass in front of {LEARNER_FNAME}. Say: You can eat this M&M now, but if you want to play a game and wait a bit longer, you can have an extra M&M later. While you’re waiting, maybe you can play drumming on the table top. If {LEARNER_FNAME} chooses to eat the treat right away, give {OBJ_PRONOUN} the M&M. If {SUBJ_PRONOUN} chooses to wait, turn on a timer for 20 seconds. Start {LEARNER_FNAME} off in the first round by drumming a song with {OBJ_PRONOUN} on the tabletop. After 20 seconds, give {OBJ_PRONOUN} two M&Ms and lots of praise. For round two, ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to repeat the task alone, this time with a 45-second wait. For round three, offer {LEARNER_FNAME} a small bowl of treats as a prize if he waits for five minutes. Will the M&M still be under the glass when the time is up? |

| PWA What to look | Does {LEARNER_FNAME} get distracted by the treat they can see on the table? What other strategies does {SUBJ_PRONOUN} use while waiting? |
| PWA Why this matters | Delay of gratification is an important aspect of self-control. Research has shown that by using different strategies (such as distraction) to resist the temptation to immediately get what you want, this skill can be encouraged and even taught. UTM-EM-049-MAR-21 |
