| PWA Try this | Find a stuffed animal to play this game with you. In this variation on Simon Says, both you and the toy will give {LEARNER_FNAME} some fun actions to follow. But there is a twist! When you ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to sit or stand, {SUBJ_PRONOUN} should follow your instructions. But when the toy gives a command, {LEARNER_FNAME} has to do the opposite. Do a practice round while {LEARNER_FNAME} is sitting. Have your toy tell {OBJ_PRONOUN} to sit – {SUBJ_PRONOUN} should do the opposite, and stand. Make sure {SUBJ_PRONOUN} remembers what to do when the instructions come from you. Once you’ve practiced a few times, start the game. Give instructions to sit/stand, open/close your eyes, or nod/shake your head, switching between the toy’s instructions and your own. After a while, change the order of instructions so they are not always alternating back and forth, to see if {LEARNER_FNAME} is paying attention. |

| PWA What to look | Pay attention to how often {LEARNER_FNAME} succeeds at doing the opposite of the toy’s instructions. |
| PWA Why this matters | When {LEARNER_FNAME} hears an instruction from the toy, {POS_PRONOUN } intuition will be to follow that command; but {SUBJ_PRONOUN} must use self control in order to do the correct (that is, the opposite) action. Practicing this challenging and complex rule switch is great way to develop this skill. UTM-EM-049-MAR-21 |
