PWA Try this
|
Collect lots of red, blue and yellow Lego or building blocks and keep them in a pile. Create a paper slide by rolling a piece of paper into a tube; you will slide blocks one at a time towards {LEARNER_FNAME}, so place the end of the slide in easy reach of {OBJ_PRONOUN}.
Ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to catch blocks as you drop them down the tube one by one, in order to make a house for his favorite stuffed toy.
Say: Let’s try to figure out your toy’s favorite color. He will tell us if the color you chose is right or not. The correct color for the first round will be blue (but don’t tell {LEARNER_FNAME} yet.)
Begin dropping blocks down the slide one at a time, alternating colors randomly. Each time {LEARNER_FNAME} takes a blue block to add to the house, make the stuffed animal nod yes. Say no if {SUBJ_PRONOUN} uses a different color. Play at least six rounds of blue blocks before switching rules and changing the color for the house. |

PWA What to look
|
It might take several rounds for {LEARNER_FNAME} to determine that the secret color is blue, but that’s OK. Just wait until {SUBJ_PRONOUN} has figured out what the first secret color is before changing it. Once the rule switches, notice whether {SUBJ_PRONOUN} starts searching for the new secret color or continues choosing the first one. |
PWA Why this matters
|
It’s cognitive flexibility at play. When the toy changes his mind and prefers a different color, {LEARNER_FNAME} needs to adjust and solve the problem. By changing {POS_PRONOUN} mindset from choosing only blocks of the first color to choosing blocks that are not that color.
