|
Take some colored paper and cut out around ten red, ten blue and ten yellow flowers. On a full sheet of white paper, draw the shape of a vase.
Lay out only the blue and yellow flowers face up and put the red flowers to the side.
Ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to collect a blue flower and place it “into” the vase by gluing the flower to the white paper. Do this around five times and take the remaining blue flowers away.
Add the red flowers to the yellow flowers on the table and ask {LEARNER_FNAME} to add only yellow flowers to the bouquet. After a few rounds, add only red flowers.

|
Focusing attention to one feature, then intentionally switching your focus to something else based on shifting goals is a key feature of cognitive flexibility. While the first phase of the task may seem quite easy, many younger learners may initially struggle to switch to a new sorting rule in the second phase. However, this skill improves with time and practice.
