PWA Try this First, create some paper props for your play kitchen. You can make them out of felt, paper, or any other materials you have at home. If you have a play kitchen at home, you can use that too. Draw a stovetop with some dials. On separate sheets, draw items like a frying pan, an egg, slices of bacon and a plate, and cut them out. Show {LEARNER_FNAME} a recipe with four to five steps while acting it out for {OBJ_PRONOUN} in the play kitchen. You might say: _Let’s make breakfast. First, we will turn on the stove. Wait for it to get hot, then crack an egg into the pan. Add the bacon. When it’s done, put everything on a plate to serve. Don’t forget to turn the stove off!_ Then it’s {LEARNER_FNAME}’s turn. Can {SUBJ_PRONOUN} make breakfast just like you did? Pretend to be a restaurant customer and watch as {LEARNER_FNAME} imitates the sequence of actions. Once you get your order, be sure to tip your chef. Come up with other meals and sequences to make (for example, make a salad, or a sandwich). Create new props for your play kitchen as needed.
PWA Variations
PWA What to look As {SUBJ_PRONOUN} is "cooking", note whether {LEARNER_FNAME} forgets steps or does them in a different order. How many steps can {SUBJ_PRONOUN} remember in the sequence?
PWA Why this matters Keeping track of multiple steps is an important part of following directions, and is a skill that {LEARNER_FNAME} will need to master in school and other activities. Practicing multi-step cooking instructions can not only help to develop working memory but also prepare {LEARNER_FNAME} to help you out in the real kitchen. UTM-EM-049-MAR-21
